DIMMU BORGIR Doesn't 'Really Have Much Material Written' For Next Album, Says SILENOZ
September 26, 2014Guitarist Sven Atle Kopperud (a.k.a. Silenoz) of Norwegian symphonic black metallers DIMMU BORGIR recently spoke to the "Metal Hammer Magazine Show" about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the band's follow-up to 2010's "Abrahadabra". "I wish I can tell you more, not out of secrecy, but we don't really have much material written, finished, but we have a lot of stuff just laying around that we just need to compile and put together," he said.
"Putting material together for us has never really been a huge problem, because the main core of the writing guys are three, three of us that [are] in the band [Silenoz, guitarist Galder and vocalist Shagrath], and we also have help from, obviously, the rest of the band that we play with live. So I think that the team that has been for the last five years or so now, it's been the best working team both on and off stage, and I would like to use that into the next album, to recreate the great feeling that we have now. So coming up with enough material is never a problem. The problem really is… or the challenge, I would say, is to try and take away, or shave off, what we shouldn't use. So, yeah, hopefully we can have more stuff written in the fall now, and I'm looking forward to that."
Silenoz also talked about being a first-time father and how it has changed his perspective on the world.
"[My son is] gonna be three years old now in September, and it's been a total transformation in the sense that your ego really has to come down quite a bit," Silenoz said.
"I always wanted to be a father, and you can never say the time is right, 'cause it just has to happen. So I'm really grateful for that. And he's remarkable. He has his own attitude already. And yeah, he's really special."
Regarding what kind of food he feeds his son, Silenoz said: "I try to give him as proper food as possible — not too much processed stuff, 'cause we all know it's not good for you. But he's very particular with his food. He knows what he likes and what he hates, so it can be a bit difficult sometimes."
Asked if his son's musical education has already started, Silenoz said: "It has. It started in the womb, actually. 'Cause my fiancée was with us [on tour] in 2012. She was, like, eight and half months pregnant when we played shows. So he has the rhythm already. Like, when we went on vacation now, he was dancing to the beats of RUSH and other bands."
DIMMU BORGIR's current touring lineup includes Geir Bratland (APOPTYGMA BERZERK, THE KOVENANT) on keyboards, Terje Andersen (a.k.a. Cyrus; SUSPERIA) on bass and Dariusz "Daray" Brzozowski" (VADER) on drums.
"Abrahadabra", the ninth album from DIMMU BORGIR, was released in Germany on September 24, 2010, in the rest of Europe on September 27, 2010, and it was made available in North America on October 12, 2010 via Nuclear Blast Records.
